FWS ReFill ReUse Initiative
The FWS Refill Reuse Initiative was started in 2017 when the Falmouth Road Race philanthropic organization awarded FWS a grant for the first two water stations. With additional contributions from private donors, the Woods Hole scientific institutions, and funding from the Falmouth Community Preservation Fund, the initiative has resulted in 11 outdoor water stations at recreational areas throughout Falmouth, nine stations at Falmouth beaches, and 3 stations at community buildings.
The goals of the Refill Reuse Falmouth are to reduce the public’s reliance on individual-sized, single-use, plastic water bottles for a wide range of environmental reasons, and promote consumption of Falmouth’s tap water after the installation of a new water treatment plant that enhances the removal of organic particulates and reduces the amount of chlorine needed for disinfection. With advanced treatment in place, the water treatment plant may remove a wide range of not-yet-regulated contaminants, such as pharmaceuticals, with technology that may be required by EPA in the future. The new water treatment plant can deliver 8 million gallons per day and when combined with the town’s existing wells, Falmouth’s water supply system delivers enough high-quality water to meet the high demand of summer months.
